Nom Noms: Oatmeal banana, Berry banana

I'm watching Stefan drink from his straw cup...on his own...filled with water. I can't believe it (note: no breastmilk or breast involved!! I'm so psyched!)

There are a lot of reasons why toddlers might not indulge in food readily...flavor, temperature, texture, color, their plate is too round, the floor makes a better surface for viewing food. Not to worry, what is scarfed down one day might be shunned and relegated to the linoleum the next. I'll be posting up some recipes that have either appeased him at least one day, or are appetizing enough for me to eat.

I've found gerber food to be...pretty nasty. My cardinal rule of feeding is that I don't expect him to eat anything I wouldn't want to eat. If he wants to eat something I wouldn't, it's up to him. I finally bought store made baby food in desperation - he wasn't eating my food regularly, some days I just don't have baby-appropriate food readily available and I am too lazy to whip something up. Gerber mangoes...eh, OK. I'd eat them. If I was REALLY hungry. Veggie mixes....barf. So bland and nasty. So I'm getting into making more purees, against the BLW practice. Food was fun until age one, now it needs to also provide sustenance. Don't get me wrong, I let him go silly experiencing food all the time, just he is eating more purees.

>>>...and a big thank you to Stefan, who has dug the computer charger plug out of the knitting pile and is now trying to plug it into this computer. My little tech-head.<<<

Today is banana day because we have been working on eating one for a day or so now. Since he wasn't into actual pieces, it's becoming other things.

Oatmeal Banana
Instant oatmeal+smoshed banana= Love
(OK, = smoosh all over the baby, table and floor.) I appreciated that though he didn't consume more than a taste, that at least he tasted it, and then had some tactile experience smooshing it up.

Banana Berry
In a blender, add 1 part mixed berries to 1 banana. Puree.
When made from frozen, it makes great ice cream (for everyone!), when slightly warmed, it makes a yummy heated snack. It tastes 1,000 times better than gerber.

Today is the First Day of the Rest of Your Life

Well, Monster, Mommy owes you an apology...sorry about that milk I consumed. I was hoping the allergy lessened, but it didn't. It's is just as horrible as ever. Let's add swollen adenoids to the list of bad things that I do to you when I have casein. Basically that means that it is really hard for you to breath, especially at night or when you've been crying. And that means Mom feels really guilty from about 6 pm until the morning. I can't believe I've forgotten to read all the labels already (it was yogurt in masala, I was hoping there wasn't so much yogurt in it). Though, today marks the beginning of me preparing more food at home (again, I've been slacking), not using pre-prepared stuff or eating out any more, except for monthly sushi:) Nom nom nom!

In fact, today, marks the beginning of a couple of things. Last night you slept through the night- no snacky nom noms at all. I can't remember my last "full" night of sleep (6 hours!)...I know I had them during the first trimester- hell, I wanted to sleep all the time then. The achiness of always having to sleep on my side kicked in during the 2nd, and that is about the time I recall having a lot of sleepless nights...so I'm calling it first night's sleep in a year- for everyone!

Another first- holding food and eating it! Or rather, holding teething relief (you still haven't held food really). A teething biscuit was more handy than the ice holder, which you make me hold anyway. It took a few seconds to coordinate hand and mouth, but you accomplished it! Hopefully that skill will transfer over to all food soon. Right now, if you eat it at all, you bring your mouth to the table and try to get it in. Very amusing now, not so hot with the ladies in a few years though. Abby will never want to play babies with you if you keep that up!

And now, why in fact is TODAY the first day of the rest of your life? Drum roll please...
We added bacon to your list of foods you have tried! I'm not sure where the article went, but there is proof that babies don't need to wait until a year to try certain foods. Foods that cause allergies like peanuts and strawberry are on there. Then there are ones that I don't think are there for allergy reasons...like meat...like BACON! Anyway, much like all the other "rules" people swear by, the foods on the not-below-1-year list are being questioned by doctors. Where as it was thought that cereal was a great first food, it shouldn't be the only, and really, probably shouldn't be given all that much- being a carbohydrate with little nutrition. Even the iron contained in it isn't readily absorbed (especially compared to that in breast milk), and other sources of certain nutrients are better for you. Regarding the allergenic food, not eating it won't save you from having an allergy down the road, so we'll just make sure you're not having reactions when we try them. Unfortunately you've missed strawberry season this year! In addition, we need to remind me that "food is fun until age one", repeatedly, as I keep getting needlessly concerned with your eating habits. I honestly don't know what I second, third, 4th, 5th guess everything I do.

But back to bacon...you actually just sucked on a little meaty strip, made your typical "new food-ew" face and I took it away once you started wiping the table with it. It's OK, we'll work on how you should treat bacon in the future. Kinda the same treatment as beer, except if some falls on the floor, you don't HAVE to suck it out of the rug;)

Pickles and Watermelon...are you pregnant? Or How we're taking a step back in BLW

Stefan was getting along famously with avocado and cereal until this week. It all started with some peaches. Fresh, ripe, soft, organic peaches. Stefan hates them and mommy learned that if you keep trying to convince a baby he wants what you're giving him, you may end up with a lap full of puke. Good gag reflex, Stef.

No problem, lets go back to bananas. Fresh, ripe, succulent, organic banana. Nope, now those are on the "gag until he pukes" list too (no I didn't learn my lesson the first time...or rather, I'm persistent).

Ok, no problem, lets just go back to our old buddy avocado...but, mark my words, mommy is making it thick- you need new textures! Blat!! Even after I thinned it out! That's now on the list. Ok, but how could we go wrong with rice cereal....we could. On the list. He had no clue what to even do with cheerios.

A side note: he still salivates over my food, like bacon...so maybe he's just ticked that I get the good stuff;)

In my efforts to be a sassy mommy, I gave him my pickle- just a hint on his lip. Viola- he loved it. Just like he loved water melon the other day- however that is kind of prone to being bitten with Mr. Tooth and chokable chunks come loose, which cause him to gag, then puke, and really has little nutritional value, so don't count on it too soon, Kid.

And just what is BLW and why does all the current food refusal effect it? Baby Lead Weaning, where basically we skip pureed food and head right to solids when he's developmentally ready. However I got a little bored and started him with some solids that could be easily mashed- by my definition, ones that he could eat if left to his own devices.

To be ready for BLW, baby has to exhibit certain signs...sits upright unassisted well, gag reflex lessened/gone, and able to pick up things with a pincher grasp. Then, healthy food is served in pieces that can be held in a fist. Baby experiments more with the new morsels than eats them, is able to explore on his own, and isn't forced to eat foods he don't want. He's not eating for nutrition, but rather for experience. Also, it prolongs the amount of time he receives breast milk, as he isn't filling his belly with solids quite yet.

So, in an effort to work on his gag reflex, I've been thickening his current food, without success. And I think we've worked backward in solid food, but it seems the other babies in his cohort on a forum I read kind of have done the same thing, so we'll just wait this out. Two steps forward, one step back...
